Autumn Adventures on Royal Deeside

The light may be fading but the colours are singing out. Yes autumn has arrived to Royal Deeside and we are bathing in the beautiful rich russets and glorious golds.

October has gifted us with warm autumnal sunshine and our guests have not only enjoyed Ballater but also enjoyed experiencing adventures further afield . Some have returned to Tullich apartment full of joy and excitement of often of their visits to the popular Dunnottar and Crathes castles

Towering spires, impressive turrets,. thick stone walls and dramatic settings – whatever pops into your mind when you hear the word “castle”, you’ll find it on Royal Deeside. From magnificent fully functioning castles to mysterious ruins, our countryside is bursting with fascinating castles to visit dating as far back as the 13th century. Crumbling ruins tell us tales of intense clan rivalries and invasions from near and far, each providing a little insight into Scottish history way back when.

Once seen, never forgotten… Visit Dunnottar Castle for your own unforgettable experience exploring the impregnable fortress that holds many rich secrets of Scotland’s colourful past.

Perched atop a 160 foot rock and surrounded on three sides by the North Sea, these dramatic and evocative cliff-top ruins were once an incredible fortress of the Earls Marischal, once one of the most powerful families in Scotland.

Steeped in history, this romantic and haunting ruin is a photographer’s paradise, a history lover’s dream and an iconic tourist destination for visitors the world over.

Crathes is a classic fairytale castle in nearby Banchory standing in superb grounds with a range of woodland trails on offer to help you explore. Inside, spiral staircases lead to rooms famous for their Jacobean painted ceilings and resident ghost, the Green Lady. Outside, the gardens feature large yew hedges and a colourful double herbaceous border. The wider estate offers six separate walking trails to enjoy a brisk Autumn walk or gentle scenic stroll.
